Photography and Your Computer
The digital potography explosion which has occurred over the last few years has created many opportunities for amateur and professional photographers. Of course, there is no substitute for composing a great photo. The numerous features available on current digital cameras and tools available to enhance and display photos, enable photograhers a amazing amound of creativity after the photo has been taken. From simple point and shoot cameras to sophicticated professional and advanced amateur digital sinlge lens refles camerax, the choices are staggerring. Many cameras allow the photographer to post-process the image in the camera. Such techniques as straightening, cropping, altering expsoure, white balance, brightness, contrast, and saturation can dramaticaly change an image. The following are links to some excellent camera review sites, where all the capabilites of digital cameras are explored in depth:
There are also many programs which enable image post-processing on your computer. Adobe Photoshop is the leading photo editing software. It has many capabilities, but the learning curve is steep, as is the price. An alternative is the GNU Image Manipulation Program (the GIMP). This program has comparable capabilities and a comparable learning curve, but the price is right (it is free). I use Bibble Lite which I find to have all the capabilties I need, is easy to learn, and no too expensive. Unfortunately the current version does not read the raw files from some of the newer digital cameras, so if this is important to you, check before you buy. There are many programs available which will display and categorize your pictures. My favorite is Picasa. It includes basic photo editing, slide shows, and even reads many camera's raw file format. And it is free. I also use Easy Slideshow Creator (shareware) to create slideshows with captions and music, which I can show from my computer or create a CD to show on any computer. These slideshows look great on a large TV. I have thousand of pictures in the form or slides and negatives from the era before digital photography. I can enjoy the best shots upon demand on my computer, because I scanned them using a professional film scanner. For me, the scanning process was a trip down memory lane. However the process is tedious because each scanned slide received indidual attention, including reviewing and sometimes post-processing the image. I now offer this service. Have you
wondered what your old photos and slides would look like on a computer?
Now you can find out! We have the capability to digitize your 35mm slides and negatives.
