Your
sliding glass door can be pried up and pulled out to gain entry to your
home. A simple and inexpensive prevention trick is to put a screw in
the track above the door, then back it out until there is just enough
clearance for the door to slide below the screw.
Since
the doors in Florida open out, they can be opened by removing the hinge
pin. Newer hinges like the one pictured have a pin sticking out that
aligns with a hole in the other side of the hinge to prevent the door
from being pried open. If your hinges don't have this safety feature
you can create a similar feature very inexpensively. Simply drill one
hole on each side of the hinge, making sure the holes are in alignment.
Then drive a finishing nail into the hole you drilled in the door side
of the hinge, leaving it sticking out far enough that when the door
closes, the head of the nail enters the hole you drilled on the other
side of the hinge. This will prevent the door from being pried open.
Keep
your windows open and feel secure that they can't be raised from the
outside with this simple window slide lock which is available at most
hardware stores. Secure it to the window frame, and the window cannot
be raised above the lock.
Lock Bumping is a threat to the security of your home. This old
technique has recently been rediscovered by the locksmith community.
The widespread availability of bump keys and a bumping tool for five
dollars or less over the internet expands this simple technique to 'bad
guys' everywhere. Most of the locks you buy in hardware stores today
are vulnerable to Lock Bumping. Contact us for information on
'bump-proof' locks.
